Pilobolus: Exploding Dung Fungus

The title is pretty self explanatory.

If you have heard of the contemporary dance company Pilobolus, you may or may not be surprised to know the origin of the company's name is Pilobolus crystallinus, a species of fungus known commonly as the "Hat Thrower" or "Dung Cannon".

Pilobolus is a small (0.8-1 in. tall) fungus identified by a clear stem (more scientifically, a sporangiophore) and a bulbous "head", upon which rests the "hat" (sporangium), which is yellow, turning black when it matures. Housed inside the hat are spores, by which the fungus reproduces. I think Pilobolus is rather pretty, despite the fact that it grows from the dung of herbivores.

When it's time for Pilobolus to reproduce it explodes -- "throws its hat" -- propelling its sporangium a distance of 6 feet, roughly 72 times the length of the fungus itself! There is some speculation that this organism may have the fastest velocity in nature. After it explodes, the sporangium lands on grass or some other plant surface, is consumed by an herbivore, takes a trip through the animal's digestive tract, and shows up once more in its dung.

Strange to think an organism would be so showy in spite of a rather crappy destiny.

Goofy sound effects and dramatic music is necessary. Of course.

Intersted in growing your own Pilobolus? I want this for Christmas.
